~~TOPIC: "COFFEE CULTURE IN HANOI" ~~
At 6.30 p.m., everyone gathered in the room and we got started!!! The topic was COFFEE CULTURE IN HANOI. That was the reason why this workshop was hosted at a coffee shop instead of at an English Centre like usual. Eventhough the room was a little small but we tried to sit closer so that new comers had some place to take a seat.
To heat the atmosphere and make everyone get closer, we played a funny game. In this game, the mission of each group is to transfer a sentence by whispering in turn till the last member of that group. Her mission was to say it out correctly. What an easy game!
Finally, both groups couldn’t make it so we had no winners today.
Going to the Part 2 – discussion, 5 groups were divided. It seemed that they had a lot of thing to talk about this topic because the atmosphere was noisy and ebullient. In my group, a pretty girl made a lot of comments on the coffee culture in Hanoi. She seemed to be knowledgeable about this topic. When being asked, she told us that she had been doing a project about Coffee in Hanoi and with her, coffee was something that couldn’t be missing in her life.
In addition, today, it was such an honor for us to welcome a very special guest – Mr.MingTing Cai. He was the judge of WORDSTORM 2013 in Round 3. He is from Taiwan and currently, he is Representative to Viet Nam at Center for Vietnamese Studies, NCKU. He is carrying a research about Pavement Culture in Vietnam so that topic absolutely attracts his concern.
~~ Mr.MingTing Cai~~
Moving to the next part, Presentation and Q&A, firstly, we discussed about the habit of drinking coffee. When being asked whether you liked drinking coffee or not. More than half of members in the room raised hands to show their agreements.
Then, Ms.Hien – a charming woman shared her ideas on how many types of coffee shops and also recommended where you could find a coffee shop that was both suitable for your taste and near where you were living. We all were attracted with her deep understanding about coffee.
In the third question which was “The differences between the coffee culture in Hanoi and that in other places of Vietnam”, the girl in my group raised her voice. From her own viewpoints, the most biggest difference was the number of coffee shops in Hanoi was much more than her home town. Secondly, the Hanoiains paid money not for the quality of coffee but more importantly, for the place where they could have some private moments with their friends or have some negotiations with business partners.
After that, in the final question - “the differences between the coffee culture in Vietnam and that of other countries in the world”, the MC asked Mr. MingTing Cai to share because he have traveled to so many countries in the world. He talked passionately about what he has knew and what he has experienced and simultaneously, we listened to him with eyes open. We found out one interesting fact that Unlike coffee in other countries, Vietnamese coffee is roasted with butter oil, which coats the beans and protects them from burning during the process. Also, in his opinion, the taste of Vietnamese people in drinking coffee is strongest in the world, especially drip coffee.
And..the last part – group works. Three groups made presentations to show ideas of building up the image of a newly-opened coffee shop. They had a lot of interesting ideas like putting cute cats around the café so that customers can take some pictures with them.
In conclusion, we not only had fun time together but also gained some knowledge about COFFEE CULTURE. Farewell partners and hope to see you next Thursday!!!
